Varicose Veins - More than a cosmetic issue

Our highly skilled General Surgeon and Phlebologist, Dr Rick Cirolli, work in close coordination with our proficient Vascular Sonographers to deliver optimum diagnostic and care for your varicose veins. Following a meticulous vein mapping procedure, our vein specialist will engage in a comprehensive consultation to determine the most tailored varicose vein treatment for your individual needs. Moreover, our clinic offers a comprehensive range of options for both spider vein treatments and cosmetic vein procedures.

Varicose veins are a prevalent condition that affects both men and women. These veins manifest as bulging, twisted, rope-like cords on the legs, often extending along the entire leg.

While the visual impact of varicose veins is unmistakable, it's essential to acknowledge that this condition is accompanied by various other leg-related symptoms. In addition to their visible appearance, many patients may also experience one or more of the following distressing leg symptoms:

• Pain (aching or cramping feeling)
• Heaviness/tiredness
• Burning or tingling sensations
• Swelling/throbbing
• Tender areas around the veins

Non treated varicose veins may progress to more serious complications:
• Varicose vein eczema and ulcers
• Inflammation (phlebitis), infection
• Blood clots (in superficial or deep veins)
• Bleeding

If you are experiencing any of the above, consult your doctor/specialist, as treatment may be required.

ELVT & UGS

EVLT is the gold standard and recommended treatment
by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
(NICE - guidelines UK 2016).

Endo Venous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and Ultrasound Guided Foam
Sclerotherapy (UGS) eliminates unsightly varicose vein
symptoms and ulcers. Research shows a success rate of
93% - 98% in individuals undergoing EVLT (based on clinical
data with up to five years of follow up).

Benefits of EVLT & UGS

Up to 98% success rate
• Immediate relief
of symptoms
• Faster healing
of varicose vein ulcers
• No
need to take time off work
• No general anaesthesia
or hospitalisation
• No scarring

Varicose Veins Treatment

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) claims an impressive track record of high success rates and minimal complication occurrences. EVLT stands as a well-established, minimally invasive treatment, enabling patients to promptly resume their regular routines. Furthermore, our services encompass cosmetic micro sclerotherapy for the treatment of spider veins, providing comprehensive solutions to address a range of vascular concerns.

Actual Procedure

• Your veins are mapped by an ultrasound scan
• The procedure will be performed by the specialist general surgeon at NZGS or Remuera Surgical Care
• The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic and takes 60-90 minutes
• A thin laser fibre is inserted into the varicose vein through a tiny entry point, usually below the knee
• Laser energy is delivered to seal the varicose vein
• Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged and recommended
• Normal daily activity can be resumed, avoiding rigorous activities such as jogging and gym workouts for 2 weeks

Some possible side effects of EVLT

• Transient discolouration may occur
• Discomfort over the treated vein may happen and be treated with non-steroidal ant inflammatory drugs, walking, and graduated compression stockings
• Small chance of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Follow up and VIP programme

Within a few weeks following treatment, the patient will attend their initial follow-up appointment. Over the course of the subsequent 12 months, a series of at least three follow-up appointments will be scheduled. These appointments will include ultrasound scans and, if necessary, potential UGS (Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy) treatments.

After the initial 12-month period, patients will be enrolled in our VIP Recall Programme. As part of this program, patients will receive periodic surveillance ultrasound scan letters every 1-2 years.

EVLT & UGS Treatment Costs

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) procedures are typically covered by most health insurers. NZGS and Remuera Surgical Care hold affiliations with Southern Cross and NIB, making us preferred providers for these insurance companies. Additionally, our facilities maintain positive working relationships with various other insurance companies.

It's important to note that small surface or spider veins are often regarded as cosmetic concerns and may not be covered by insurance policies. When a patient meets the insurer's specific criteria, the insurer typically approves the expenses related to the consultation, ultrasound scan, and varicose vein treatment for a 12-month period.

For individuals without insurance coverage, we encourage you to get in touch with NZGS to obtain an estimate of the costs associated with your treatment.
