Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a safe and minimally invasive procedure that utilises a flexible small camera to provide a thorough examination of the interior of your body. This enables your surgeon to inspect the lining of the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and large bowel (colon).

These investigations are crucial for diagnosing various conditions affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) or urinary (GU) tract. They play a key role in identifying issues such as ulcers, polyps, cancer, bleeding, infections, and inflammation within the digestive and urinary systems. Furthermore, these endoscopic procedures not only diagnose but often allow for the immediate treatment of disorders encountered during the examination.

Dr Rick Cirolli provides the following services:

Gastroscopy for examination of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum

Colonoscopy for assessment of the colon

Cystoscopy for inspection of the bladder and urethra (Gisborne location only)

The procedures are conducted at Chelsea Hospital (Gisborne)and in Auckland at Remuera Surgical Care, with patients undergoing light sedation to ensure a pain-free and comfortable experience. For those undergoing a gastroscopy, a local anaesthetic is applied to the back of the throat to prevent the gag reflex.

While complications are possible, they are exceedingly rare.
